Learning Objective/Exit Outcomes:

Improv, focus, listening; review subtraction, improve speed in subtraction problem solving

State Standards:

MGSE2.OA.2 Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies. By the end of Grade 2, know from memory all sums of two one-digit numbers.

Integration Area/Subject:

Math

Materials/Playing Space:

Large (soft) playground ball; Open space for a circle

Description:

Game is played in a circle. The leader stands in the center, holding a throw-able ball, something like a playground ball or beach ball that would not hurt if someone got hit with it. To scale Cat Ball back a step, choose an object that is LESS throwable to keep control. If even more control is needed, hand the object to the chosen student and have them hand it back after they’ve given the answer.

The leader gives out a category of any kind, and it is the group’s job to respond with items in that category if the leader throws the ball to them. They must respond before the ball gets to them. They throw it back to the leader, and the leader continues

To review subtraction, give a category like, “single digit subtraction,” and choose a problem for the chosen student to solve. When they receive the ball or non-ball, they solve the problem and hand the item back.
