  • Students will practice writing skills while expressing knowledge of planets.
  • Students will engage in collaborative discussion with their peers and teacher.

State Standards:

S4E1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to compare and contrast the physical attributes of stars and planets.

  1. Construct an explanation of the differences between stars and planets.

ELAGSE4W2 Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly.

ELAGSE4SL1 Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 4 topics and texts, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly.

Integration Area/Subject:

Science and ELA

Materials/Playing Space:

  • Scrap Paper
  • Pencils/Pens

Description:

The teacher will pick out a specific planet. Students should then write down physical attributes or characteristics that are found on that particular planet.  Students are then prompted to crumble their paper and toss it in a basket, in the middle of the floor. The teacher and PAIR Specialist will read each response and discuss in class.

Notes:

This activity is great with reviewing materials or introducing a lesson. One could ask, “What do you think about when you see the Earth, or when you see a picture of Saturn?”.
