4th Grade: Angles and Lines, Pirate Ship

Pair Lesson Plans | Fox and SCES, Year One

PAIR Activities: PIRATE SHIP, BIPPITY BIPPITY BOP

Learning Objective/Exit Outcomes:

  • Students will be able to identify and differentiate lines, line segments, rays and angles through visual/physical representations.

Integration Area/Subject: Math

State Standards:
MGSE4.G.1 Draw points, lines, line segments, rays, angles (right, acute, obtuse), and perpendicular and parallel lines. Identify these in two-dimensional figures.

Materials/Playing Space:
Outside space adjacent to classroom

Description:
Students will utilize two different games: Pirate Ship and another, Bippity Bippity Bop to visually show the difference between a line, line segment, rays and angles.

In Pirate Ship, the teacher/specialist will change the commands to match the subject. For this lesson, I used the terms right, acute and obtuse angles. When these commands were said, the students would have to use their arms to create each angle. If an angle wasn’t correct, that student was out and became a shark. The rest of the game was played as written.

In Bippity, Bippity, Bop, the teacher/specialist will introduce the game as listed in the handbook (Be sure to teach the class Elephant and/or Rabbit). After a round or two, the students should be familiar enough with the style that modifications can occur. The class is divided up into groups of 3. Using the vocabulary terms lines, line segment, ray, angles, etc. each group of 3 will come up with their own version of “Elephant” or “Rabbit” using those terms. After about 5 min, the groups will share and our most helpful versions will be used in the game.
