PAIR shows teachers how to use arts integration strategies in core content subjects (science, social studies, math and English/ language arts). Arts integration is a teaching strategy that encourages students and teachers to construct meaning through the exploration of core content through the arts. PAIR concentrates on using foundational skills in drama, visual art and creative movement in order to engage students more deeply in learning. The arts integration strategies PAIR specialists introduce to classroom teachers are not about creating an artistic product (like a dance recital or a mural) but rather using the art form as an alternative process to learning in a classroom setting.
Sample PAIR Arts Integration Strategies
Over the course of a three year partnership, PAIR Specialists will introduce, model and observe 50+ strategies compiled from a variety of sources. Once teachers feel comfortable teaching PAIR strategies, Specialists will guide them through creating new arts based strategies for their classrooms that address their specific needs and concerns.
Here are a few examples of arts integration strategies we introduce in the first year of the PAIR Program:
Sample PAIR Lesson Plans
Once teachers have been introduced to an arts integration strategy (like those above), they work in collaboration with their PAIR Specialist to create lessons where they apply the strategy specifically in academic areas where they or their students could use support. Below are some actual examples of lesson plans developed and taught by PAIR Specialists and their participating classroom teachers:
