The Professional Arts Integration Resource (PAIR) Program provides hands-on, arts based professional development for teachers to more deeply engage students in learning. The PAIR Program takes place throughout the entire school year. Each participating classroom teacher is partnered with a PAIR arts integration specialist. Together, the classroom teacher and the PAIR specialist will plan and teach lessons that combine the classroom teacher’s expertise in core content with the PAIR specialist’s pedagogy in the arts.
PAIR lessons integrate drama, visual arts and creative movement techniques directly with state standards while emphasizing 21st Century life skills such as collaboration, empathy, self-discipline and resilience. Teachers participating in the PAIR program are introduced to flexible and easily adapted arts strategies at monthly after school trainings. Each year, participating teachers will gain between 25 and 30 PAIR strategies.
Learning through the arts engages students and positions the teacher as a co-learner, supporting student-centered classrooms. Of course, the objective of the PAIR program is not to give teachers MORE work to do, but to empower them through an expanded series of tools and techniques they can use to reach students who maybe need a little something different. PAIR lessons appeal to non-traditional or kinesthetic learners, shy students who might not have spoken up in a traditional setting, gifted students looking to be challenged differently and so many others.
